MORE WAYS TO PREVENT OR RESTORE DECAY

We emphasized diet as one main way of controlling cavities, however, we have many tips and tricks for decay prevention. Night brushing and flossing are most important for the lowest bacteria load in the mouth before sleeping for 7-10 hours. Fluoride toothpaste can help strengthen tooth enamel. Early detection is also a key factor in the treatment and prognosis of a decayed tooth. Regular dental exams can catch decay before they can cause larger, more costly needs. Kalina Dental knows that cavities will happen, even with a perfect diet and great home care. Here are some ways we can restore a tooth or teeth:

Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride can help remineralize tooth enamel and reverse early-stage tooth decay. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends professional Fluoride treatments every 3, 6, or 12 months based on the cavity risk level of the patient.

Dental Sealants: In some cases, especially for early-stage cavities or in children with a high risk of decay, dental sealants may be applied to the deep pits and grooves of molars and premolars to prevent decay.

Silver Diamine Fluoride: SDF is a liquid substance used in patients receiving regular dental care for its ability to arrest or slow down the progression of dental caries (tooth decay) with a minimally invasive application.

Dental Fillings: This is the most common treatment for cavities. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed, and the area is filled with materials such as composite resin or amalgam.

Dental Crowns or Stainless Steel Crown: For more extensive decay or damage, a dental crown may be necessary. This involves capping the affected tooth with a custom-made crown to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance.

Root Canal Therapy: If the decay has reached the pulp (the innermost part) of the tooth and caused infection or inflammation, a root canal may be necessary. This involves removing the infected or damaged pulp and cleaning and disinfecting the root canal.

As we wrap up children’s dental health month, Kalina Dental hopes that these tips can help create a healthy tooth future for you and your family!
