ELECTRIC OR MANUAL?

Kalina Dental strives to help patients maintain dental health beyond their appointments. The stores are full of so many options for home care. The question for patients is what is best for me? Below are the categories of oral health aids and the dental condition they are used to help.

Mouthwash: Antiseptic mouthwashes can help reduce plaque, fight bacteria, and freshen breath related to controlling gum disease bacteria. Some mouthwashes also contain fluoride, which can strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Other mouthwashes are specific to patients who struggle with dry mouth and are designed to increase saliva flow.

Dental Floss or Floss Picks: These are essential for cleaning between teeth and along the gum line where toothbrushes can't reach effectively. Cleaning the area that toothbrushes cannot reach is both effective in cavity and gum disease prevention.

Electric Toothbrush: Electric toothbrushes can provide more thorough cleaning compared to manual brushing, as they often have rotating or vibrating bristle heads. Patients who are known to form a lot of tartar can benefit from this type of toothbrush. Also, certain brands of electric toothbrushes are recommended for reducing the rate of gum recession. They are designed to be gentle yet thorough.

Water Flosser (Oral Irrigator): Water flossers use a stream of water to remove plaque and food particles between teeth and below the gum line. They can be particularly helpful for people with braces or dental implants. These are also recommended for patients who need to floss but do not like to floss.

Tongue Scraper: Cleaning the tongue can help remove bacteria and debris that contribute to bad breath and oral hygiene issues.

Dental Picks or Stimulators: These tools can help clean between teeth and stimulate the gums. We advise that any picks or stimulators never be made of metal and to not be overused or chewed on.

Sugar-free Gum: Chewing sugar-free gum after meals can help stimulate saliva production, which can neutralize acids and wash away food particles. A gum with xylitol can also help get rid of bacteria correlated with gum disease and dental cavities.

Fluoride Toothpaste: Fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. Look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Patients with a higher rate of cavities can also get a prescription fluoride toothpaste to use as a topical treatment daily at home. Some toothpastes also have certain ingredients and formulas made for sensitive teeth.

Probiotics Supplements: As we continue to learn more about overall health and dental health we have learned that the microbiome of the mouth and gut are very important in the control of dental disease.

Your dental team is best educated in your needs and can help guide you to specific brands, items, or prescriptions that will best help you maintain your oral health.
